Le Monde: Romania’s farming land, El Dorado for Western European farmers

mai 17th, 2012

Increasing foreign interest in Romania’s agricultural lands recently got international media attention with French newspaper Le Monde publishing a piece about foreign buyers of Romanian agricultural land.

The high prices for the agricultural land and the bureaucracy in Western Europe are cited among the reasons foreigners choose to buy land in Romania.

Maxime Laurent, a French Agriculture graduate decided to try his luck in agriculture in Romania, according to Le Monde. He bought some land in Macesu de Sus, in Dolj county, 10 kilometers away from the Danube. His parents didn’t manage to buy more land in France because of the obstacles imposed by the French authorities, so he decided to try Romania, according to Le Monde.

The journalists from “Le Monde” are saying that this should not come as a surprise, as Romania’s agricultural land is a sort of El Dorado for farmers from Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy or Denmark.

The Laurent family invested in agriculture at Macesu de Sus because the field was near the Danube. In Dolj, the Laurent family produces wheat, barley, sunflower and rapeseed. Le Monde highlights that prices for agricultural land in Romania are around EUR 2,000/ha, much less than in Western Europe.

Foreign investors have managed to buy 700,000 ha of agricultural land in Romania – or some 8.3 percent of the country’s total of arable area.

Its fruit, which is known as a watermelon is a special kind of fruit known by botanists as a pepo, a berry which has a thick rind(exocarp) and fleshy center (mesocarp and endocarp); pepos are derived from an inferior ovary, and are characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae.

The watermelon fruit, loosely considered a type of melon (although not in the genus Cucumis), has a smooth exterior rind (green, yellow and sometimes white) and a juicy, sweet interior flesh (usually pink, but sometimes orange, yellow, red and sometimes green if not ripe). It is also commonly used to make a variety of salads, most notably fruit salad.

Sunflower Seeds from Romania and Republic of Moldavia

iunie 27th, 2011

The sunflower seed is the fruit of the sunflower (Helianthus annuus). The term “sunflower seed” is actually a misnomer when applied to the seed in its pericarp (hull). Botanically speaking, it is more properly referred to as an achene. When dehulled, the edible remainder is called the sunflower kernel.

sunflowerseed2 - www.ukrotrade.eu

There are three types of commonly used sunflower seeds. Linoleic (most common), high oleic, and Nusun. Each variety has its own unique levels of monounsaturated, saturated, and polyunsaturated fats. The information in this article refers mainly to the linoleic variety.

For commercial purposes, sunflower seeds are usually classified by the pattern on their husks. If the husk is solid black, the seeds are called black oil sunflower seeds. The crops may be referred to as oilseed sunflower crops. These seeds are usually pressed into sunflower oil. Striped sunflower seeds are primarily used for food; as a result, they may be called confectionery sunflower seeds.

Romanian Wine

iunie 15th, 2011

Romania is one of the world’s largest wine producers, producing (as of 2003) around 545,700 tons of wine. In recent years, Romania has attracted many European business people and wine buyers, due to the affordable prices of both vineyards and wines compared to other wine producing nations such as France, Germany, and Italy.

VinAlbRosu www.ukrotrade.eu

Wine was first introduced 3,000 years ago in Dacia (present-day Romania) by the Greeks, who arrived from the Black Sea.

Due to the hot dry summers, the location proved to be successful and the grape vineyards thrived. Since the medieval times, wine has been the traditional a

lcoholic beverage of the Romanians.

Later on, during the medieval agesSaxons emigrated to Romania, bringing along with them different variations of Germanic grape vines. However, by the 1800s, most of these grape vines were replaced by grapes from Western Europe.

In the 1880sphylloxera (a pale yellow sap-sucking insect that attacks the roots of vines) arrived in Romania  from North America. The phylloxera wiped out a majority of Europe’s vineyards, including those in Romania. Eventually, many of the Romanian vines were replaced by those imported from France and other foreign nations, such as MerlotChardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

romanian wine - www.ukrotrade.eu

In last years, Romania was the twelfth largest wine producing country in the world.
